Five Years Of Buhari's Administration Wasteful, Corrupt, Taking Nigeria Nowhere —PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party has described as wasteful and corrupt, the past five years of President Muhammadu Buhari's administration in Nigeria.

The PDP in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbodiyan, on Friday said President Buhari had taken Nigeria backward by 60 years.

The statement reads, "In line with the assessments of majority of Nigerians, our party views the last five years of Buhari administration as wasteful and could at best be described as season of the locusts.

"The PDP laments that the Buhari-led All Progressives Congress government has turned our nation into a wasteland, devastated her economy, shattered our national dreams, crushed the hope of citizens and set our country backward.

"The party describes as saddening that May 29, under President Buhari, has become synonymous with the enthronement of incompetence, insensitive leadership, endemic corruption in high places and governance by propaganda and false performance claims.

"Under President Buhari, May 29 has become a day of grieving for Nigerians; a day for commemoration of failed promises, reversal of gains achieved by past leaders and retrogression in our body polity as a nation.

"This administration has failed woefully in its three major governance planks of provision of security, economic recovery and fight against corruption.

"In the last five years, the APC administration has done nothing but driving our nation along the precipices; reneged on all its campaign promises, ruined our productive sector, frustrated our farmers, manufacturers and small scale entrepreneurs, devalued our naira, wrecked employment opportunities for our youth, turned our once prosperous nation into the poverty capital of the world while accumulating huge

foreign debts for this generation and the unborn.

"Under five years, President Buhari has borrowed from every corner of the world.

"Our party had already alerted Nigerians that with the volume of borrowing, President Buhari and the APC have placed our nation on the international auction market.

"In the last five years, corruption has also worsened in government circle as shown in Transparency International’s corruption perception index.

"Under the APC administration, insurgents, marauders and bandits, who have been pushed to the fringes under the PDP, have resurged and now having field day ravaging communities and killing our compatriots while government continue in its lip service and empty condolence messages.

"It is distressing that instead of heeding wise counsel to accept failure and avoid making false performance claims, the Buhari Presidency just yesterday, released a list of recycled fictitious achievements, including very insensitive claim of having routed out bandits; even as marauders were pillaging communities and killing our compatriots in Sokoto and other states, particularly in the North-West.

"A look at the list exposed reused figures and data without corresponding verifiable projects in any part of the country, apart from attempts to appropriate PDP projects."

Christian Association Of Nigeria Tells Kaduna State Governor, El-Rufai, To Re-open Religious Centres

The Kaduna State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria has asked Governor Nasir El-Rufai to re-open religious centres in the state.

The association, in a letter directed to Kaduna deputy governor and chairperson, Standing Committee on COVID-19, Dr. Hadiza Balarabe, and signed by the Kaduna State CAN Chairman, Reverend Joseph Hayab, highlighted suggested guidelines for worship regulations in accordance with the protocol of COVID-19.

Following the recent review of the lockdown and allowing Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday as days of relaxing lockdown, CAN said El-Rufai should include religious days in the lockdown reviews.

Suggesting its guidelines, CAN said churches will disinfect their premises first before they are re-opened for services.

The group said, “Churches will provide alcoholic based sanitisers, temperature readers, soap and water in their premises to be supervised by medical professionals in the church.

“Every worshipper must either use soap to wash their hands or apply sanitisers.

“The temperature of every worshipper must be taken before admission into the church and people with the high temperature will not be allowed into the church but be advised to go and see their doctors. Every worshipper must wear facemask.

“Worship leaders shall be made wear hand cloves if they are to handle equipment such as the microphone.

“Worship leaders shall put on face mask to cover their mouth and nose when they speak through the microphone.”

Other safety guidelines CAN said it would ensure include, “Worshippers shall be required to avoid joining public transport, therefore, shall be enjoined to worship near home, within walking distance.

“Worshippers who have to travel far to church will be enjoined to make use of personal means of transport.

“Alternatively, churches would be enjoined to provide transport for members without means of transport in adherence to the social distancing rules.

“Social distancing will be observed in the sitting arrangement with one-meter gap between two worshippers.

“Every worship service shall not exceed one hour. There will be a gap of 25 or 30 minutes between one service and another where there are multiple services to avoid crowd.

“Churches can make use of classrooms and multipurpose halls for services where available, especially in big churches to accommodate more worshippers at a go.

“TV circuit and speakers can be used for those who are not inside the main auditorium.

“Handshaking and hugging shall be avoided before, during and after the service. Churches observing Holy Communion service will use separate cups for each participant.”

Don Jazzy, Segalink Condemn Southern Kaduna Killings, Call For Justice

Condemnations have continued to trail the killing of unarmed villagers in Southern Kaduna communities by armed Fulani herdsmen.

Between May 19 to 24, herdsmen have killed scores of persons in many communities in the area.

Reacting to the killings, music producer, Don Jazzy, expressed concern over government’s failure to act on the killings despite the frequency of occurrence.

He said, "The pictures of inhabitants of Southern Kaduna, who were gruesomely killed in bandits' attacks in the past few days is such a sorry sight to behold. It's even more worrying that many others have reportedly fled their homes for safety.

"The security of lives and properties of our people should be the primary duty of government at all levels. Our security agencies should be charged to do more in this regard, ensuring the sanctity of lives and properties. Peace to the departed souls."

Segalink, Don Jazzy

Rights campaigner Segun Awosanya also known as Segalink, asked governor of Kaduna State, Nasir el-Rufai, to take immediate responsibility for the killings.

He said, "I’ve always been entertained by the furtive attempt by interests to downplay brazen murders/impunity by certain ethnic brigades in the bid to trivialize the grief of the unjustly oppressed. This academic calendar ritual Is sadly playing out before our eyes again on the SK matter.

"As the saying goes, “the people that know us best, know how best to hurt us.” This is why politicians of an already beleaguered admin morbidly seeking to bury their family albatross, use expensive influencers to brainwash the populace.  See Also Exclusive EXCLUSIVE: How Fulani Herdsmen Invaded Kajuru In Southern Kaduna, Slaughtered 17 People In One Night, Killed Five More Persons While Funeral For Initial Victims Was Ongoing

"The truth, however, must never be a foreign language. Even a dead man’s words are valued once the claims can be verified. We must never attenuate our humanity at any cost. Murdered children and defenseless women must get justice regardless of the adjective we find convenient.

"Be it a clash, genocide, Kajuru, homicide -- death is death, and the governor is the CSO that owes the people the duty of care to protect them from this kind of situation. Whichever way you choose to look at it, the state has failed and the governor must take responsibility."

Lagos Youth Demand Compensation For Family Of Teenager Killed By Police

Youths in Lagos have demanded that the Nigeria Police Force adequately compensate the family of Ezekwe Tina, a teenage girl killed by policemen in Lagos.

Oworo Youth Forum are also demanding that the officers involved in the killing, ASP Theophilus Otobo and Inspector Oguntoba Olamigoke attached to Bariga Police Station, must be made to face the full wrath of the law.

It was gathered that the policemen, who were trying to enforce curfew at the end of the Third Mainland Bridge, shot at the driver of a commercial bus.

Tina was hit by a bullet and was rushed to the hospital but didn’t survive.

The youth described Tina’s death as “one too many”, adding that the police have been responsible for the deaths of innocent citizens and illegal extortions of young Nigerians.

“We at Oworo Youth Forum are not only calling for the perpetrators to be arrested, paraded and prosecuted publicly but also demanding that the family of Tina must be adequately compensated for their loss.

“We want to make it categorically clear that this will not be one of those cases that will be swept under the carpet under the disguise of orderly room trial and prosecution.
“We will engage and resist with everything we have within the ambit of the law to make sure justice is not beheaded,” the youth said.

They are calling on civil society groups, activists and well-meaning and progressive Nigerians to join in the demand for justice and an end to police brutality and impunity.

Meanwhile, the police have said the two officers involved in the act have been arrested and undergoing internal disciplinary proceedings.

“The police is in contact with the family of the victim from the day of the incident. The Command deeply sympathise with the family and friends of the deceased person. The Commissioner of Police calls for calm and assures the family that the perpetrators of this dastardly act will face the full weight of the law," Bala Elkana, Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, said.

Abacha Stole Close To $1bn As Head Of State, Says President Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that late General Sani Abacha, Nigeria’s late military Dictator, stole close to $1bn between 1993 and 1998.

Buhari in an article published in Newsweek, a United States-based publication, thanked countries that have returned the looted funds back to Nigeria.

Though the President did not mention the name of Sani Abacha directly, it was clear that he was referring to the late dictator.

Buhari served under the late Abacha as head of Petroleum Trust Fund.

He said, “And we can now move forward with road, rail and power station construction -- in part under own resources -- thanks to close to a billion dollars of funds stolen from the people of Nigeria under a previous undemocratic junta in the 1990s that have now been returned to our country from the US, UK and Switzerland.

“That these friendly nations agreed to return these funds after so long is testament to the fact that Nigeria is rightly seen as an increasingly stable and beneficial place to transact and invest. It is much the same across the continent, with sub-saharan Africa now outpacing Asia, Europe and North America by some measure in terms of foreign direct investment inflows-to-GDP, perhaps for the very first time.”

Hundreds of millions of dollars stolen by the late Abacha and kept in foreign accounts have since been recovered by various Nigerian governments.

In 1998, General Abubakar Abdulsalami recovered $750m from the Abacha family; in 2000, General Olusegun Obasanjo recovered $64m from Switzerland; still in 2002, Obasanjo got another $1.2bn from a deal with the Abacha family and another $160m in 2003 from Jersey, British Island. Obasanjo got another $88m in 2003, $461m in 2005 and $44 in 2006, all from Switzerland.

On his part, former President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan retrieved $227m from Liechtenstein while President Buhari got $322 in 2018 and the last $311 in 2020.

In a letter by its Head of Human Resources, Administration and Procurement, Olanike Ogunleye, the management of the OPL said the organisation was overwhelmed by the adverse effects of the Coronavirus pandemic and had found it hard to sustain its workforce.

The letter reads in part, "As you are aware, the current COVID-19 pandemic has had a toll on all our business significantly. This has resulted to making some difficult business decisions. Due to this situation, we regret to inform you that your employment will be put on hold till further notice.   Olusegun Obasanjo

"You are to hand over all company properties in your possession to the human resource department, who shall do a confirmation of the exit clearance process before your final entitlements (if any) would be paid."

"This year, they have paid just January salary and half of April salary which was paid on 20th of April."

Obasanjo was President of Nigeria for eight years from 1999 to 2007.
